Kantanos- History

We welcome you to "Kandania Apartments" and to historical Kantanos!
The town has many centuries of history. It was an ancient city, Byzantine Metropolis, supportive base of freedom movements in the years of the Ottoman Empire, gave a significant appearance during the German invasion and was simultaneously the uprising capitol of the large area of Selino.

Ancient Kantanos is located at the area "Kadros", in Kakodiki. It is a beautiful area for one to visit.
Even so, the demanding walker and explorer will meet many other ancient cities in the Selino area, such as: Irtakina, Eliros, Syia, and Lissos, all visitable.

The Byzantine period in history makes its presentation acknowledgable today with Byzantine churches, memorials from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, of which well kept frescos bring artistic characteristics of well known artists of it's time. Picturesque roads lead to these Byzantine artifacts, which bring you in touch with history and nature alike.

The village, as other villages in Crete and in Greece, paid dearly for resisting the German invasion. Kantanos was completely burned to the ground, as the marble plaques show, that conquerer's egotism made sure to leave at the exit of the village after the plunder and destruction on June 2nd, 1942.
